Slow Dog (redux)

My favorite episdode of Futurama is "Jurassic Bark".

The one where Fry wants to clone his dog back from the dead.

It always makes me cry, just a little.

Ok. A lot.

That episode always gets to me.

It reminds me of my dog. He was always with me when I was growing up. Like Seymour, he was a mutt, a stray. He was my friend when no one else was. When the world was against me, he was there. In the end, I moved away and my mom did too. I couldnt take him and neither could she. So he was put down.

At the time it felt...unfair somehow.

I felt he deserved better.

Looking back now, I've found another perspective.

He had a good life and he was loved.

Thats all he ever wanted.

Jesus....dont we all?....

Update:

I've noticed from my Statcounter that many people find my page because of the phrase

"For a thousand summers I will wait for you"

I can only assume you were touched by that song in the end of the Futurama episode too!

So here is the 411 on the song...

The song is "I Will Wait For You" by Andy Williams.
English Words by Norman Gimbel and Music by Michel Legrand
Its from the 1964 film "The Umbrellas Of Cherbourg".
I believe the version used in the Futurama episode was by Connie Francis.

"If it takes forever I will wait for you
For a thousand summers I will wait for you
Till you're back beside me, till I'm holding you
Till I hear you sigh here in my arms

Anywhere you wander, anywhere you go
Every day remember how I love you so
In your heart believe what in my heart I know
That forevermore I'll wait for you

The clock will tick away the hours one by one
Then the time will come when all the waiting's done
The time when you return and find me here and run
Straight to my waiting arms

If it takes forever I will wait for you
For a thousand summers I will wait for you
Till you're here beside me, till I'm touching you
And forevermore sharing your love"

TS--Checking out your blog when I should be working. That's one of my favorite Futuramas, too. The three best tear jerkers are that one, Fry's lucky clover (Luck of the Fryish?), and Leela's parents (the song at the ending is perfect).

Hey Jefe!

Futurama was a great show. It's a pity it never really caught on. Thank goodness for Cartoon Network! 'Luck of the Fryrish' always got me too. I believe someone once said the best comedians are the ones that can make you cry too. Or something like that.

Now get back to work! :)

TS, I've been meaning to say that you have a way of connecting emotionally through your writing that I've rarely encountered. "Bully" was one of those pieces... I find myself not so much pondering what you write, but feeling swept along, that I was right there, experiencing what you felt. It's powerful.

It's obvious that you pour your heart into your writing. Thank you.

Nope. Futurama got cancelled. :-(

It lives on with the Cartoon Networks 'Adult Swim' line up though!

I've heard rumors, just rumors mind you, that they might do a third season for Cartoon Network based on its popularity! It might happen. It worked for the Family Guy after all!

hey there, same anonymous as last time again =)
as you know i just happened to stumble upon ur site at first, but then i saw you replied to ur repliers.
ok i feel stupid for asking, but what do you mean they mite do a third season for Cartoon Network? 0.o I have no idea what it means "Adult Swim" line up. I have no idea what Cartoon Network has to do with Futurama, I don't know how what worked for Family Guy, and I'm totally unsure if all that in a nutshell basically means Futurama could come back.
Yes, I'm stupid, I'm aware. =D
Btw, I'll be watching it tonite at 10 ^^

LOL! I always respond to my posters. ;-)

So many questions!

Well, Family Guy was on Fox for a couple of seasons, but it got cancelled. 'Low ratings'. Then it got picked up by Cartoon Network for their late night line up called Adult Swim when they show 'more mature' cartoons. The ratings it generated, combined with the DVD sales convinced the network execs that Family Guy was a show worth having! So it got picked up by Fox again. The hope is that this will happen for Futurama. I've heard Futurama's DVD sales and ratings have been pretty good. I'm keeping my fingers crossed and hoping they make more episodes! I loved that show.

Thanks too for reading my blog, BTW! I've been kinda lazy about updating it lately. I should have some new stuff pretty soon. :-)

FYI

This site comes up when searching on the lyrics because it's hit #5 on Google's list!

I've never even READ a blog before so it feels somewhat strange to post to one. As with others, Jurasic Bark touched me deeply. It's the ONLY cartoon that's ever made me cry -- and the ending still does EVERY time. I can't even think about the lyrics without tearing up anymore. Ahhh, the power our pets have over us with their unconditional love...

The rumor of new Futurama episodes is good to hear. As others may remember, the lack of ratings wasn't the show's fault. Its time slot was right after Sunday Night Football on Fox. That meant it often was either preempted or started "already in progress" more times than not. I'll bet it would have done GREAT if it had been nestled between the Simpsons and X Files. Sigh...

Well, it's off to Amazon to order the season DVDs. That's probably the best way to "vote" for its return.

Yup -- still #5 on the hit list. Just type "if it takes forever i will wait for you" (with the quotes) into Google and there you are.

BTW I've got Jurasic Bark saved on my DVR and I just found how to e-mail you. If you like, I could capture just the closing song and send it as an attachment. Hopefully, the copyright Nazis wouldn't get too upset -- afterall, it's less than a minute...

Hello

I am a fellow Futurama fan and just to do a nit picky correction (sorry) if they would start seasons up again it would be the fourth or fifth season. The fourth season by the DVDs are often split up to be considered the fifth season, but definitely not the third. I own all the DVD's. yay. That episode made me bawl as well and usually anything that has to do with fry and leela also the luck of the Fryrish. oh the tears. and just to further be part of this club i too was looking for the lyrics of the song. thank you blog guy/girl...not quite sure. i just basically read everything that had to do with futurama and ignored everything else. the latest rumors are that the newer seasons may become straight to DVD release. i am really, really wishing. well thanks for the lyrics. ciao. i may have to return later.

I prefer to believe in the final shot Seymour was only taking a nap. Afterall, his petrified version was standing upright. My hope is if Futurama every does return to production they will revisit the Seymour question. Nothing is shown that prevents Fry from later changing his mind. Why not bring Seymour back as a REGULAR or at least a recurring character like Leela's "pet?"

Anyone who wishs an MP3 (408K) of the end version of "I Will Wait for You" may e-mail me at: itisjunk@sbcglobal.net. Be sure to include the song title in your request so it won't automatically go poof. This is the e-address I give out for what will generally be junk e-mail.

If there are any copyright Nazies out there -- relax. You're not lossing any money over this. If nothing else, you'll probably sell MORE videos from the exposure. My order for ALL the episodes has already been placed.

... Well everyone, I think it is trult inspiring that so many people can relate to the same issue. Like so many of you I really enjoyed Futurama and was devastated when it was cancelled. The series contained everything from side splitting gags to very moving and emotional moments (Fry's dog and Leela's parents, and of course where Fry play's the Holophoner for Leela). Well, here's me hoping that out there all these comments will get read by the guys at Cartoon Network and they will give us some more episodes to treasure. Some great blog here! Take it easy guys.

thank you so much I've looked forever tryin to find the exact singer of that song, and all i found were by other artists and didnt affect me the same way. The episode of "Jurassic Bark" always leaves me in tears...also Seymour remids me of my dog too, and i feel I wasnt there for her when i should have been, but she never gave up on me. "The Umbrellas Of Cherbourg", which i saw while searching for the song had the original song, which is in french. The closest i found was this great site, and plays "If it takes forever I will wait for you" exact artist but not listed, site also has other real oldies on it =) i hope you enjoy-

my cat had been missing. for five months. he left on halloween 2006, and never came back.

he is the best cat who has ever happened. my animal buddy.

whenever "jurassic bark" would come on Cartoon Network, i was not able to watch it, at least not without crying like a little girl at the end.

well, i got a call from a local animal shelter. they got a stray, and scanned him for RFID, and sure enough, he was registered with Home Again.

five months. do you know how many times in five months you give up hope, assume death, hope again, get false alarms, and accept you will never see your favoritest pet ever again?

the first night he was home, as the sedatives from the vet were wearing off, i pulled him up to my lap, his back legs still limp from the drugs, put his head on my chest, and clicked on the Tivo.

i had always hoped he would one day come home to me again. i had been saving "Jurassic Bark" on my Tivo since the week he left.

with both kids asleep and the wife reading in the other room, i hit Play, and finally was able to watch one of my favorite episodes of Futurama, no, favorite episodes of ANY tv show, once again.

and quietly, in the dark, with my best friend sleeping on my chest, i cried during the last scene of the episode.
